Major Relief as Electricity Rates Slashed by upto Rs7.59 per unit across Pakistan

ISLAMABAD – In a special ceremony held in the federal capital, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif unveiled a significant reduction in electricity prices as part of the government’s relief measures.

Domestic consumers will now benefit from a decrease of Rs7.41 per unit, while industrial users will see a Rs7.59 per unit reduction. This initiative aims to alleviate financial strain on households and boost industrial activity amid current economic challenges.

The move is anticipated to ease the burden of high electricity bills, particularly during the summer season, while also aiding industries grappling with escalating operational expenses. Officials stressed that the revised tariffs would improve access to essential services and strengthen economic stability.

The event, which introduced the new electricity subsidy package, was attended by senior ministers and political leaders. It began with a Quranic recitation and a Naat Sharif, marking a respectful commencement to the proceedings.

Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Sharif reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to public welfare, stating that the price cut was a vital measure to counter rising living costs. He assured citizens that the government remains focused on policies that enhance affordability and economic resilience.

Other leaders present at the ceremony also voiced their support for the initiative, pledging to work toward improving Pakistan’s economic outlook.

This decision reflects the government’s broader strategy to tackle energy affordability issues and deliver prompt relief to consumers facing steep utility expenses.

Sovereignty Triumphs Over Journalism in a Thrilling 151st Kentucky Derby

In a rain-soaked showdown at the 151st Kentucky Derby, Sovereignty claimed victory in the first leg of the Triple Crown, finishing with an impressive time of 2:02.31. The Bill Mott-trained colt, closing at 7-1 odds, outpaced the favored Journalism and late addition Baeza, who rounded out the top finishers.

The race began with a swift pace as Sovereignty and Journalism initially trailed behind early leaders Citizen Bull, Neoequos, and Owen Almighty. However, the two surged ahead in the final stretch, turning the competition into a dramatic duel.

This year’s Derby boasted a 5millionpurse,matchinglastyear’sprize,withSovereigntyearning5millionpurse,matchinglastyearsprize,withSovereigntyearning3.1 million for the win. Bettors who backed the underdog reaped significant rewards—a 2winbetonSovereigntyreturned2winbetonSovereigntyreturned17.96, while exacta, trifecta, and superfecta payouts reached 48.32,48.32,231.12, and $1,682.27, respectively.

The victory marked a historic moment for owner Godolphin (led by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum) and jockey Junior Alvarado, both securing their first Derby wins. For trainer Bill Mott, it was his second Derby triumph, though this one carried extra significance. His previous win in 2019 came via disqualification when Country House was declared the winner after Maximum Security’s controversial interference ruling. This time, Sovereignty’s clean, decisive victory made the celebration even sweeter.

“He made a powerful late charge,” Mott told the Los Angeles Times. “This horse earned it the right way—he’s exceptional, and Godolphin’s team prepared him perfectly.”

Heavy rain created muddy track conditions, impacting all 19 contenders. Two horses—Rodriguez and Grande—were scratched before the race due to foot injuries, with Baeza taking Rodriguez’s spot and quickly rising to 14-1 odds. Journalism entered as the 3-1 favorite but settled for second place.

The event also marked the return of trainer Bob Baffert, who had been suspended for three years following Medina Spirit’s 2021 disqualification over a banned substance. Though his horse Rodriguez withdrew, Baffert’s other entry, Citizen Bull, raced at 13-1 odds but fell short of the win.

ISLAMABAD – Starting April 9 (Wednesday), the Swedish Migration Agency will reopen its residence and work permit services in Pakistan, easing the process for local applicants.

An official statement confirmed, “Applicants can now complete biometric submissions, passport verifications, and interviews at the Swedish Embassy in Islamabad after applying.”

However, this update does not include Schengen visa applications for short-term visits to Sweden.

From April 9 onward, individuals seeking residence permits for family reunification, employment, or studies in Sweden can finalize their applications at the Swedish Embassy in Islamabad. The previous rule requiring travel to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, has been revoked.

This change applies to Pakistani nationals and legal residents in Pakistan who have been directed by the Swedish Migration Agency to visit a Swedish embassy for interviews, passport checks, or biometric registration.

For Schengen visa applications (short stays up to 90 days), Pakistani citizens must still apply through VFS Global offices in Bangkok, Yangon, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Manila, Cebu, Jakarta, Bali, Phnom Penh, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Tokyo, or Seoul. Submitted applications will then be processed by the Swedish Embassy in Bangkok.

The Swedish Migration Agency is assessing options for handling Schengen visa applications within Pakistan and will share updates when a decision is made.
